The Vancouver International Children's Festival takes over Granville Island from May 25–31, 2026, and if you've already tried to grab show tickets, you've probably noticed: the scheduled performances are vanishing fast.

Here's the good news β€” you don't need a ticketed show to make a whole day of it. The festival's Activity Village is the part nobody talks about loudly enough.

Activity Village: Drop-In, No Reservation Needed

An Activity Village wristband is $8 per person (GST and fees included). Show ticket holders get in free. Hours: Tue–Fri 9:30am–2:30pm Β· Sat 10:30am–6:00pm Β· Sun 10:30am–5:00pm.

  • Twist & Toddle β€” hands-on play space for ages 0–4. First stop with a baby or new walker.
  • Face Painting β€” a 49-year festival tradition, all ages.
  • Inner Garden β€” a quiet rest space, all ages. Translation: somewhere to nurse, soothe, or just sit.
  • Magical Mystery Maze, Spin Art Bicycle, and a Scavenger Hunt with animal sculptures (ages 5+).
  • Circus Arts β€” juggling, Diablo, rhythm sticks (ages 3+).
  • Cultural programming: Kultura Kubo, Korean Arts, African Pavilion, and LunarFest celebrations.
  • Roving characters and stilt walkers wandering the site.

Accessibility: This Is Where the Festival Actually Shines

Every theatre on the Granville Island Theatre District is wheelchair accessible and has a baby change table β€” six venues with proper change facilities inside one walkable site:

  • Revue Stage β€” 1601 Johnston St
  • Granville Island Stage β€” 1585 Johnston St
  • Carousel Theatre for Young People β€” 1411 Cartwright St
  • Waterfront Theatre β€” 1412 Cartwright St
  • The Nest (Studio 1398) β€” 1398 Cartwright St, 3rd floor
  • Performance Works β€” 1218 Cartwright St

And this detail doesn't get said often enough: the Activity Village has an adult-sized change table area. For families with older kids or teens with disabilities who still need a clean, safe place to be changed, that is a rare and meaningful thing in this city. Activity Village is on grass rather than paved paths, so plan accordingly with strollers.

The False Creek Ferries Question (Read This Before You Go)

Straight from the False Creek Ferries FAQ: children must be removed from strollers prior to boarding and all strollers must be collapsed. Some large strollers are simply too big to be loaded on the ferry at all. Kids under 3 ride free. Capacity is 12 passengers per vessel.

In practice: a lightweight umbrella stroller or compact travel stroller is your best bet. A baby carrier is even better β€” both hands free, no collapsing, no panic at the dock.

My Honest Game Plan

Arrive on a weekday morning β€” Tue/Wed/Thu around 10am is the sweet spot. Buy the $8 wristband, head straight to Twist & Toddle, hit Face Painting on the way out, and use the Inner Garden when anyone needs a reset. Pack a carrier instead of a stroller, change diapers at whichever theatre is closest, and budget for snack stops at the Public Market. You don't need a sold-out show to have a great day.
